Solved Why won't my laptop find its CD/DVD drive any more?

June 10, 2018 at 08:39:49
Specs: Windows 10
The CD/DVD drive on my Acer laptop has disappeared! It doesn't show up in Explorer, and although this seems to be a common problem, none of the solutions out there help. Searching Windows for new drivers tells me they're all ok and up to date, and the Acer site doesn't offer any new drives either.

The drive doesn't recognise that any kind of disc has been inserted into the drive.

Any ideas, please, in clear, simple English for non-experts?

Try deleting the UpperFilters & LowerFilters from the registry: https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-del...

Which model Acer do you have?

Does the drive show up in Device Manager?

Are you able (and ok) to access the drive bay and remove the drive, and then re-insert the drive again? It "may" simply be that it's come loose from its edge connector, or that the contacts have become oxidised... Removing and re-installing a couple of times may help clean those contacts. If you try this approach, then also clean the actual drive edge connector with a soft pencil style erase; wipe afterwards with a lint free cloth (a kleenex is fine too); then re-insert/remove as above a couple of times. Do not use anything even mildly abrasive to clean contacts.
