Why won't my desktop come on?

August 6, 2017 at 09:23:57
Specs: Windows 7
It was on last night, no one touched it. It's powered off this morning and won't power on. When the power button is held the fans spin for a second, but that's it. The green light in back in steady on.

Sounds rather like power supply trouble. For anyone to try to help properly they will need the make and model number of the computer - we don't even know if it is a PC or a laptop.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

From the brief description, with a reference to a green light at the back, I'm inclined to think it is a desktop pc. But, as per Derek, actual make and model is essential here.

Power unit or motherboard problem or CPU or.... How old is this PC?
Green light in back? Is this where the LAN cable is connected?

Sorry, I was rather pressed for time before. It is a desktop: HP Pavilion Elite HPE 515t. The green lite I'm referring to is on the back, underneath the power supply cord (this light is on whenever the computer is plugged in, whether powered on or off). The computer is...not new...haha. It is probably close to the end of it's life. But if it was the power supply (for instance) I could probably spring the 30 bucks for it. But if it's the motherboard.... Just wondering if a fix is even plausible.

Do you have a voltmeter, and if so are you ok with going inside the case and checking volts various?

Also - and this is a very loooooong shot, with power cord removed so no volts going in, open case and carefully remove and reseat all plugs on the motherboard. It's just possible that one of the psu connectors has come slightly adrift?
