Why won't my Dell Inspiron e1705 start up?

April 6, 2015 at 18:11:10
Specs: Win XP SP3
When I push start button, usually the power light comes on for a few seconds, then shuts off. One out of of every ten tries, the power light comes on and then then the hard drive light comes on and then both shut off after a few seconds with a "click" sound coming from below. When it last was working, I could only start up after it was plugged in for a half hour. I have been using it plugged in with no battery installed for many years. In what order should I replace parts?

Assuming it doesn't entail taking the whole thing apart, you might try removing the hard drive. Then see if it starts up. It won't go into windows of course but that way you can see if it still acts the same way. If it consistantly keeps running and giving a boot device error (because there's no hard drive) then likely the hard drive is the problem.

If that's not it the problem could be just about anything. You could try installing a new battery but I'm thinking the problem is inside the laptop and not battery-related. But I guess you won't know for sure unless you try.
