As per Derek - my first thought would be to check that the little (And it is...) slide/lock switch is in the unlocked position?

Having been there in the past... I know it can happen and lead one a merry dance...

it is possible that you can't get it normal to work. write-protected means there might be physical problem with the card, such as memory chip is damaed.

Does the card show up when installed in a computer? if so then check the properties for the card and see if the card is set to read only?
