Why My External Drive Very Slow Transfer? ADATA HD710 600GB

November 3, 2013 at 23:11:28
Specs: windows8, centrino duo
I have that external drive since 6 months ago and the issue from 2 months ago
This ex drive have USB3.0, but my laptop only support USB 2.0
The problem is it has very very slow transfer data while copying, even read a subfolder.
I'm really sure this device has worked at USB2.0 transfer rate or high speed. not at USB1.0 transfer. I checked in at "Device Manager" properties on USB HUB, Tab "advanced" and say hub is operating at HIGH SPEED

Also I have configured it on policies property device at better performance option

Does anyone give me advice how to make it back and work with high speed transfer?

What are the stated read/write speeds when transferring data to and from your external HDD.
(you may have to click on, 'more details' in the transfer window)

Also, try the external drive with another PC. See if the performance is the same.

Hi Peet,

Transfer rate is less than 1KB/sec,sometime stuck at 0byte/sec. is it possible a virus cause? if it's a virus, what exacly that virus? now I try using AVG free edtn. but I hopeless it can't fix the issue

I have tried with my other laptop same OS ( Win8) and USB storage WIFI and get the same problem.

More questions than answers, unfortunately. ;o(

Out of curiosity, do you have another external drive to compare it with?
You could even try it with a USB memory stick - see if the read write speeds are any better ... Though, if you are getting the same results by using your external HDD on another PC, it certainly looks like it's something wrong with the external drive.

If the problem definitely points to being your ext HDD, you could try reformatting it - though don't forget to back up any files you have on it.

If faulty, is it under warranty.

May also be worth running Seatools to check out the basic integrity of the drive.

Just a thought. Not had experience of this range of product, but I wonder if there's preinstalled software on the drive. I have recollections of the dreadful backup software on WD Passport drives which auto-installed.

Anyone else care to chime in? :o)

Hi Peet100,

Yes, I already test my another external drive and have avarage transfers rate at 20MB.
AVG finished with whole disks scan and not resolved the problem this ext HD.
Even I try with linux OS, still.., I got low transfer rate, The progress run then stuck, then copying again, then stuck and continously.

CHKDSK without any parameter finish and report the corruputed file on $RECYCLE.BIN and $SYSTEM INFORMATION. It's takes 15minutes
on that folders, it's have large corrupt file, more than 20GB. But the problem is, I cannot delete with command prompt or even "unlocker" say corrupt files and must run CHKDSK with /f
I try to scan it with CHKDSK /f . It's look no progress. The percentage still 0% for long time, just get 25% in 36hours. Means I need more days just to scan it?? so I decided to close.

You know, I really want to reformating / warranty claim the HD to end this problem, but doing huge files backup with very low rate makes me crazy.

Not yet test on another laptop. but I already doing with fresh installed windows. Also I haven't try your link

As far I remember Adata Ext HD come with no Pre-installed software and with WD hdd

Is there anyone have same problem with this products? I mean Adata ext HD?. Please kindly share to me

Do you need to retrieve important data from that drive. If so access it as best you can and copy across the relevant files/folders.

Otherwise just reformat the drive and see what happens.

All indicators point to it being a faulty HDD (either the drive itself, or the caddy's interface). However, as it's under guarantee, you wont be pulling it apart to take a look...

Return it to the supplier and ask for a refund or replacement.
