why does my Win 7 laptop freeze on external HDD?

Specs: Windows 7, 6gb
I have a WD3200BPVT 320gb HDD that I used to have on a laptop that is no longer working (win xp)... So Ive put this HDD on an enclosure to use it as an external and retrieve any data on it on my new laptop (win 7)... Device manager "sees" it... installs its drivers... "My computer" sees it and gives it the letter "G:/"... but it keeps reading it (green bar on top of the window keeps loading) and once I left/right click on it "my computer" window freezes and is not responding and only recovers once I pull out the usb enclosure!

Ive also tried to run chkdsk on cmd but once I type chkdsk g: /r and hit enter it does nothing. it simply changes line. Is that normal?

I have also tried to use ubuntu to read this hdd but ubuntu suggests i should go back to windows and run chkdsk twice before returning to ubuntu to use it. Any suggestions on how to fix this hdd or recover its data?

Ive used several recovery data softwares but they run forever and only reach up to 400-500 files

What was the issue (if any) with your XP laptop? I'm wondering if it was down to HD failure, in which case it will be a game to get that disk going.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
