Solved Why does my laptop keep shutting down?

November 7, 2015 at 11:00:43
Specs: Windows 10
I have been recently experiencing an annoying glitch with my laptop. Several times a day my laptop shuts down despite my having double-checked to make sure that my chosen power option "never" shuts down. Any solution to this problem is appreciated. And, of course, my Norton vault has to be re-opened (another annoying thing!). Thank you in advance.

Does it misbehave in any other way?

Is it new or was it upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10?

Make sure the vents are clean because overheating can cause this. Are you using it on a flat surface, ironically using a laptop on your lap can block vents.

Better let us have the make and model number of your lappy - it might help.

Thank you for your assistance. My ASUS (model U80A) lap top is about 5 years old and it is only used on the dining room table free from clutter. No "vent blocking" here! Yes, I am using Windows 10. I also noticed that since I changed to Comcast (from DSL with Fairpoint) that the connection with the laptop to my printer is problematic. It almost always says that the printer is off when collecting status (and it is not). It takes forever to have the lap top to realize that the printer is on for it to start printing or, I usually shut down the lap top, start it up and the connection gets made. Frustrating!

A long shot but try running it without the main battery. If it does better then it is could be a bad battery draining all the power.

Good point. The battery is definitely not what it used to be. I constantly use it plugged in; however, on the rare occasion when I unplug it and use the laptop in another room I notice that the run time is somewhat shorter than it used to be. Hmmm...this is a possibility. I will consider buying a new battery. Thank you for your suggestion.

Uh oh. I'm not sure what "safe" mode is. I do not see anything from the drop-downs which reference a safe mode. When would I operate my lap top in the safe mode? And how do I know when I am in the safe mode?
