Solved Why does my Epson ET-3600 not using its black ink?

Specs: Macintosh
My Epson ET-3600 is 18 months old. It's best feature is it is equipped with ink "Eco-Tanks" as opposed to ink cartridges. This allows for much more printing before replacing the ink. For the past few months, the supply levels have shown that the black ink is low even though it continued to print pages in black ink only when commanded.
However, for the past two weeks, it is only printing pages in cyan, magenta, and yellow. I purchased and refilled the black ink tank, but it is still only printing pages using the other three colors. It was a $400 printer, so I would prefer to try fixing it before buying a new one.

One possibility... have you run a cleaner routine for the printing head(s)...?

What does a test print produce; presumably that ought to show what is what in terms of printing from al ink pots - colour and black?

It may be that the black one is a little mucky etc....?

At $400 I'd be very loathe to dump it without trying to resolve the problem you describe...

Epson doesn't want any of your ink tanks to go dry. It screws up the print head nozzles. So, when you start to get low on Black ink you should have seen a message asking if you wanted to use the color inks to print black text. You should have an option to say no. My Epson shows a nag screen when those conditions occur but I can choose to continue using the Black ink tank. I am assuming you have the same options.
