Solved why does my computer turn on, power up and sometimes not

January 16, 2016 at 23:42:57
Specs: Windows XP
Have a Dell desk top. About a month ago, I tried to start the unit, pushed the start up button on the front of the case. It did not start to power up. Yet the led light in the back of the unit showed power coming in. Then, thinking I may have a faulty push button switch, I pushed the button a few times. Fans came on, worked fine. Then, I shut the computer down after use. Later tried to start the unit. Would not power up. Yet, today, I tried to start the unit. Started fine. So, I turned it off, thinking it may restart. It did not start back up by pushing the power button. .

When you attempt to start it but it doesn't 'power up', what does it do? Do the fans and drives spin up and LEDs flash but nothing shows on the screen or is it just dead?

If it seems dead it's probably the power supply or a power connection. If the fans and drives spin up it may still be a PSU problem or the motherboard. Sometimes bad motherboard capacitors can cause a computer to work sporadically. Check the electrolytic capacitors especially near the cpu to see if they look 'puffy' or have dried residue on top indicating leakage. This might help:

I would lean towards assuming that this is a power supply issue. If you have a suitable replacement power supply handy, I would try that and see if it makes a difference but a good inspection with a strong light of the motherboard cannot hurt and might reveal an issue.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

The power button on the tower rarely goes bad so I highly doubt that's the problem. I'm with Fingers with it probably being a power supply issue. You didn't posted the model or model nnumber but if your Dell is running XP, it's likely pretty old. Does your power button light up? Are there A-B-C-D LEDs in the back of the case?
