Why do printer need color ink cartridge just to print B&W?

Specs: Windows 7
Why does the Dell V510 All-in-one Printer need the color ink cartridge to print. It will not print with just the black ink cartridge if the color cartridge is empty. This is very frustrating and a big time waster. It's like they really want you to buy ink cartridges even if you don't need them. My other printers will work with just black cartridge if need be. No way to bypass this in any setting.

Usually, if the printer uses a "composite" colour cartridge (CMY in the same cartridge), it won't print if the C,M or Y is all used up.

On printers which have separate cartridges for every colour (they are the best type of printer to have) you can still use it if a colour is empty.

So you just have to make sure you don't buy a cheap printer which uses a composite CMY cartridge.

Go into properties on the printer and choose print black only
