What is happening when you attempt the installation? Any error messages etc.?

You appear to have the minimal RAM - at least 1Gig).

What is the HD capacity?

Is this computer currently running any version of Windows? We need more information than you provided. If this is a factory assembled unit provide the full brand and model number. If a custom built unit, provide motherboard, CPU, etc.

Considering you are running DDR1 RAM the hardware may pre-date the release of Windows 7.

"MSI DDR 1196 mb and phoenix - awardbios v6.00pg"

Nothing there of much use. Please post the complete system specs; especially the make/model of motherboard.

When installing Win7, be sure to delete ALL partitions & start with unallocated space. You can repartition after Windows is installed using EaseUS Partition Master.

no error msgs, machine switches off but retains power. it is the factory motherboard (not built up). 1gb ram, and i have tried 6 different hdd (40gb, 80gb and 160gb) - all the same issue. i can install win xp (cd) but not win 7 (dvd). The mb can only manage ide, there are no sata ports on the motherboard.i tried placing a dvdrom on the machine and the cmos sees it as a dvd-rom but when you want to select the boot device, it only shows a cd-rom , not the dvd-rom drive...........I suspect the hardware cannot manage win 7, yet msi website has drivers for win 7???
