A BIOS password is generally created by the end-user, it's not enabled by default. How is it you don't know the password, is it not your PC? It appears you asked this same question in the HP forum, here's the answer from an "expert": https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Noteb...

Here's the service guide: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manua...

I don't know the password because I got this computer from HP several years ago, do not remember setting one, and have lost several books, probably while moving, one of which had a list of such passwords. Another option I have heard of is removing the battery that powers the cmos that holds that password, effectively erasing it. I am having trouble finding that battery unless it is called an RTC battery in this unit. I hope that explains why I don't have the password. The reason I need it is to allow a boot from USB in case of system crashes or malware hacks.

"unless it is called an RTC battery in this unit"

If it is coin shaped, that is it.

"RTC" is "Real Time Clock". As opposed to "fake time clock"?

It keeps the clock running when no other power is available.
Same as in an electronic watch.

But does it also power the cmos? I think it does but want confirmation before I open the case. Thank you for all the help.
