Not all laptops use the same make/model dvd unit; so you need to know "ideally" which one is in yours. Using Belarc Advisor (a free safe to use utility which will dig out all sorts of useful info - including hardware) or via device manager in Control Panel, you can determine which one you have.

Or have a look in Device Manager (in control Panel)

Equally you could use an external one - they invariably cost a lot less.. I have both Samsung and Liteon units; prefer the Liteon for various reasons. Usually they are usb powered; but you can ()with a Y-adapter power them with an external ac adapter if usb power is little short...

Simple to use; connect/plug it into a usb port and you're away....

Replacing the one in a laptop isn't generally a major project. Some units have a separate removable cover over them; some require the whole base cover of the laptop to be removed.

The height of the the drive is important; some are 9mm and some 7.5mm; as is the overall shape...

Amazon may have one spec'df or your laptop; similarly Egghead. And equally eBay may have them? Ideally ensure (if you go for a replacement internal uiti) that it is guaranteed and can be returned if it doesn't fit etc..

An external usb unit is by far the simpler and possibly safer option?

"if possible" try to avoid one made by Matsxyza as they cannot easily be made region free. (The" xyz" letters are actually meant to be "hit"; but if they are included in that name then net nannies grab the whole thing as a naughty word and worse...)

I have no answers, just questions.

"Toshiba satellite t-55 5230"

Posting the correct model number would be helpful. Is it C55DT-C5230? C55T-B5230? Something else?

Are you running Linux or Windows? Which version? How do you know the optical drive is bad? Will the drive play CDs but not DVDs? or nothing at all? Does it show up in My Computer? Device Manager?

You can check ebay too. Used, exact replacement parts are all over the place. Just do a search there for your model number.
