What to upgrade on Emachines EL1333

October 22, 2017 at 03:02:52
Specs: Windows 7
I have a 7 year old Win 7 64 bit EL1333 that is slow with choppy videos. I am not a gamer. I downloaded and installed all Windows updates, updated drivers, and removed old programs I no longer use. In the past, I've installed hard drives and fans (on other pcs), that's it. What should I do to speed it up?

The specs are:

Processor: AMD Athlon 2650e, 1600MGz 1 core
RAM - 2GB
Total Physical Memory - 1.75GB
Total Virtual Memory - 3.50GB

Thanks. Jane

After doing the dust check, lets have a look at this side of things.

Here are the next 2 steps, more steps will be needed, after I see the results of these logs.

Run them in this order.

Step 1: Run AdwCleaner
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivi...
http://www.raymond.cc/blog/adwclean...
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/do...
https://toolslib.net/downloads/view...
https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcle...
Another Tutorial, other is on the toolslib download page.
http://www.adlice.com/documentation...
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click Scan
In the results tabs, uncheck anything you don't want to remove.
Click on Cleaning.
Confirm each time with Ok.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please Copy & Paste the contents of that logfile with your next answer.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner [C1 or later].txt as well.
http://i.imgur.com/r3PoAEG.gif

Step 2: Run Malwarebytes Junkware Removal Tool (JRT)
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Securi...
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
https://www.malwarebytes.com/junkwa...
Download Malwarebytes Junkware Removal Tool to your Desktop. If your default download location is not the Desktop, drag it out of it's location onto the Desktop.
Warning! Once the scan is complete JRT will shut down your browser with NO warning.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Temporarily disable your antivirus and any antispyware real time protection before performing a scan. Click this link to see a list of security programs that should be disabled and how to disable them.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/for...
http://www.techsupportforum.com/for...
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7/8, right-click JRT and select Run as Administrator
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your Desktop and will automatically open.
Copy and Paste the contents of the JRT.txt log in your reply, please.

Add CCleaner-Slim to the list of downloads. Run the cleaner & the registry scanner, remove everything they find. Also click on Tools > Startup & disable all unnecessary startup entries. After doing so, reboot.

https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/b...

On the hardware end, you have too little RAM for Win7 64-bit plus need a graphics upgrade. It appears the max RAM the system will take is 2 x 2GB DDR2-800. You likely have 2 x 1GB, so you will have to replace both.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...

As for the graphics, the board has a PCIe x16 slot so you're in luck. Your system only has a 220W power supply so you'll need a card with low power consumption. Here's one possibility:

Next step.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it onto your Desktop. If your default download location is not the Desktop, drag it out of it's location onto the Desktop.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
If we have to run Farbar more than once, refer this SS.
http://i.imgur.com/yUxNw0j.gif
Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the Desktop.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt)
The logs are large, upload them using one of these. No time delays/Captcha-I'm not a Robot/account/registration needed. Give us the links please.

Agree with hardware upgrade choices upon completion of 'clean out' you are doing now.
You could also swap out the conventional hard drive for an SSD SATA drive. but it will be a pricier upgrade. You could keep the SSD size to a 250GB model but you would probably need to move your personal data off the existing drive before cloning it to the SSD drive and put it back on it after wiping it as a secondary storage drive. This increases the complexity but keeps the price lower than a larger SSD drive.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Copy & Paste the text in Blue below & save it into Notepad on your Desktop & name it fixlist.txt
NOTE: It is important that Notepad is used. The fix will not work if Word or some other program is used.
NOTE: It is important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

After running Farbar, none of the USB ports are working. I noticed it when the cursor didn't move while using the mouse. I tried all of the ports and a different mouse. Is there a way to get the ports working again or did farbar ruin them for good?

I received the ram yesterday and installed that this morning, pretty easy. The video card is to be delivered today, but when I opened my EL 1333 to install the ram, I also looked for the card based on riider's suggestion of https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...

Unless I am overlooking it, I don't see anything similar to the suggested video card. Attached are photos of the inside of my EL1333 and the hard drive.

Since I've never installed a video card before, I was relying on suggestions. Is the card correct or, again, am I just overlooking where it would be placed inside my EL 1333?

Thanks in advance for your help. Jane

I do not see any links to pictures of your system.
Your system is most likely running on 'onboard' video so you will not see a video card installed but you should see a longer slot somewhere near the middle of the motherboard that aligns with one of the top rear removable slot covers on your case.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I found the slot for the video card, but the card does not fit. Apparently, I need a low-profile card. However, I ran sample videos in Media Player, which seem to be running smoothly. But, when I tried to play youtube videos, they are continually loading, but will not play and no error messages. What am I missing?

Thanks again, for your help. I will contact the seller of the video card and ask if he has a low profile that I can exchange.

You don't mention what your connection speed is to the internet. Much of anything below 6MB service these days is pretty much useless for video...
