"Well I have 18 gigs of RAM but I figure I can only use about 6 of it"

If you're running XP, you can use about 3.5GB of it.

Why didn't you post the make/model of your current board & CPU? Maybe a graphics card upgrade would be a better choice? BTW, how do you come up with 18 GB RAM, what speed is it, & which OS are you running? I doubt it's XP.

Well I have 18 gigs of RAM but I figure I can only use about 6 of it. I am asking, what motherboard and processor would be the best purchase for what I have.

- RAM : 18 Gigs of Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR 3
- Power : Corsair Builder Series CX 600 Watt

Above is what I have,

I am wanting to build a new PC with those components.

That part you said already, but you did not answer the important part of the question back. We need to know what the speed of the memory is and in what configuration (how many sticks of which sizes and are any of them matched pairs).
Next, what are you planing on using the computer for? If you are planning on gaming, then you will need to consider replacing/upgrading the graphics card because it may very well be where you are losing performance now (which is why you were asked what MB/CPU you have now). What you do with your computer will determine where best to spend your money in order to get the best system for your use without spending a fortune.
Finally, we need to know what your budget is that you can spend so we can recommend the best combination within your price range.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
