|The safest thing to do is to remove the old hard disk and put it safely to one side for the time being. Install a new hard disk, install the operating system to get your computer working again.|
You can then re-install the old hard disk as a second drive and copy the photos from the old to the new. With luck you should be able to copy all your photos. If you are unlucky there may be one or two photos than cannot be copied.
When you have everything you need off the old disk and onto the new you can remove the old hard disk and take a sledge hammer to it and then bin it. The sledge hammer is to make sure no one else can copy your files.
I would than give some consideration to archiving your important data to a CD/DVD. Keeping important stuff on a hard drive is not a good idea as all hard drives will fail eventually. You can get many hundreds of photos on a CD and many thousands onto a DVD and they will last for ever, or at least as long as you are ever likely to need them.
