If you tried a fresh install, could be RAM

Try the memtest86 live cd.

Of course, you have run anti virus & antispyware programs?

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.

You listed zero info about your system except for RAM. 512MB isn't a heck of a lot so I wouldn't expect your system to perform extremely well. Sounds like you have other things going on though. If you've scanned for infections & come up clean, the problem is probably way too much garbage loading at startup. Being that you only have 512MB RAM, you should be running as lean as possible.

MSCONFIG can be used to manage the startup apps:

You should also install a cleaner such as CCleaner-Slim & use it regularly. CCleaner also has a way of managing the startup programs, it may be a little easier than MSCONFIG. Just click Tools > Startup, then disable or delete any programs you don't want pre-loading.
