Solved Western Digital Elements external drive installation

July 6, 2014 at 08:51:49
Specs: Windows 7
I recently purchased a WD Elements drive to use with my Toshiba Laptop. Although it appears to register, the light on the drive flashes and the disc spins, it doesn't appear in Explorer. Am I missing a step? Thanks. Paul

Look in device manager. The external drive should show as TWO devices. Mass Storage device and the actual hard drive inside the case.

I presume you rebooted your laptop and tried the other usb ports on it?
Also try the external on a different PC to see if it works there....

Look in Windows Disk Management for the drive. You may need to partition and format it before it will appear in Computer. You can do that while in Disk Management.

Did your drive come with a cable with 2 USB A connectors or only one?

I looked on Disk Management but its as if the drive isn't there. I don't know how to partition or format it if I can't see it. Thanks for your interest tho.

I tried all those things but it made no difference. And it doesn't seem to make any difference which of the three USB ports I use. Plugging into another computer is a good idea tho I'll ask a friend to try it for me. Thanks for your help.
