webcam constantly refreshes

Specs: Windows XP SP3, 3.2/512MB
I have a Microsoft VX-2000 Lifecam. It works fine on my Vista desktop (AMD 2.0 GHx, 2GB Ram), but when I conenct it to my Win XP SP3 laptop (3.2GHz, 512MB of memory), it constantly flashes as if it is refreshing every second. Now I know you might point to the difference in memory, but when when I first bought the camera it worked fine on both machines, but since I restored my laptop with the factory DVD and reapplied all the windows updates, it no longer works properly. Anyone have any ideas I might try?

Did you re-download the correct drivers for the webcam? Despite if the webcam is plug and play, I can guarantee there are updated drivers. Check out Microsoft's website and look up at that webcam model and see if there's any updated drivers for it.

Another thing I noticed is you said you did a factory DVD restore.. maybe there are some updated chipset drivers out there off your computer manufacture's website that could offer smoother functionality.

Also, do you have the webcam plugged in to the USB port directly or through a hub?

Hi Jonas,

Yes the camera is plugged directly into a USB port.

You mention about the possibility of driver and chipset updates. Assuming these were installed at one time, would they not have been reinstalled sometime after I restored my machines. What I mean is I didn't by default download any driver or chipset updates, so I am assuming they came as part of Windows Update, and therefore I would think the same would happen again. Am I missing something?
