WD hdd click when shutdown the system

May 10, 2012 at 05:51:29
Specs: Win xp SP3, pentium 4 3ghz HT
I have 40gb and 80gb black caviar and they both click(only single click) when shutdown the system. They are not bad because i tested them.
My other 20gb seagate hdd doesn't click when shutdown.

When shutdown i mean the moment when the power is cut(blue then black screen) then click from WD hdd.

Have they been fallen by any chance? Just disconnect them from your computer and check for any physical damages.

Some hard drives click in that situation, many don't. That's probably a sound they make when the heads are parked - moved to a position where they can't harm the data when the drive stops spinning and the heads settle down onto the disks. If the hard drive diagnostics reveal no problems, then that's probably the normal situation for the drive model.

If you ran the WD diags and it passed then don't worry about it. They are pretty old by the way.

Hang up and live.
