Do you want to connect to the network at boot or do you want to prevent it from connecting?
If you want to prevent it from connecting at boot, turn WiFi off before you shut down. You didn't need to remove any parts.

"wanting to connect to network at boot"

I'm guessing your HDD has failed & the BIOS is just going thru the boot order. It gets to the HDD, it doesn't work, so it moves to the next choice in the boot order which is the network. And since no network is available, it stalls there.

Pity we have to guess though.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
