Specs: Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, 8 GB RAM
Hey all - this just started happening yesterday and it's bugging me - perhaps someone here has seen this before and can give a hint as to what's happening.

I hibernate this laptop frequently - mostly overnight or when I have to leave for a few hours. Up until yesterday, that worked just fine. Starting yesterday, when I wake it from hibernation and hover over a program that's open in the task bar- mainly folders, sticky notes, and text files - instead of seeing a preview, there's a box the size of the thumbnail with the icon of the folder or text program. If I maximize the folder or file, then the preview thumbnails come back and stay until after the next hibernation.

If I have to, I can keep with the maximizing, but since it's new...it's kinda bothering me. I haven't changed anything on the computer in the last few days besides using it more - no new installs or new settings.

As it says in the computer info section, this is a Lenovo Thinkpad running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. If there's more information needed I can provide it.

Any ideas?

The heat is being a little weird right now in this laptop, so I've opened a new question for that. (It's running about 10 degrees hotter after it wakes from hibernation than it does before, but it otherwise seems to be running fine.) However, when I woke it today from hibernation, although the heat is doing that, the thumbnails were back to normal. The icon cache's date is for yesterday, so I guess it rebuild itself. I'm not sure, all I'm sure of is that the previews were back without me needing to open each. So...it basically fixed itself. Thanks for your hints, everyone.

You need to do a proper shutdown occasionally, then reboot it. Hibernation used frequently can cause unusual Windows behaviour.

Hi - actually, I had rebooted it - just yesterday morning, and then I had to leave. When I came back and woke it it was doing this. So it was off overnight, started up at 10, hibernated at 1, woken at 7, and doing the icon previews.
It did it again this morning - when I hover over one to bring up the view of it, it was the same - only the icon in all the open programs in both thumbnail and full preview.
I don't like sleeping the laptop as that makes the D: drive disappear sometimes. Plus, I did this same thing with my other laptop and this one for a couple months before this started.

It could be your icon cache file is corrupt. go to
C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\IconCache.db

and delete the IconCache.db file, then reboot.

Try other ideas first but if it comes to it System Restore might fix it (back to a date before it happened).

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Thanks for the hint about the icon cache file - as soon as I have time to actually sit down at the computer, I'll give it a try and I'll be sure to come back and let you know if it worked.

After doing some Googling on the icon cache file, it may be a little more to it than just deleting the file. Try deleting it though Windows Explorer first but if that doesn't work, read on.
Apparently a copy is kept in RAM and may just rewrite the corrupted file. Do a Google search for deleting the cache file. Someone posted on how do do it through the command prompt and it may work better to do it this way.

Tried just deleting the icon cache - yeah, big surprise it didn't work. Will try the command prompt version when I get a chance.

Odd thing - when I bring up Open Office for the first time after hibernation, it's all black with white outlines. Goes normal after a few seconds, but still. Only Open Office does it.

Good news (partly anyhow). Thanks for taking the trouble to pop back and let us know.
