w510 powers on at plug in w/o button then overheats no post

Lenovo w510 immediately powers on at plug in even without keyboard and power button installed. The fan turns on for a second or two then turns off. The laptop does not appear to POST. The circuit runs through to the think light and the network light turns on however the lcd then stays blank, overheats and sometimes turns off, sometimes it does not turn off and it gets really hot. I already took out a small piece of magnesium casing I found in the mobo but this should not cause a short I don't think. I also saw some brown looking residue around the graphics card but it is not pop or anything because it is hard like glue. The CPU appears to not be fully covered in one of the corners with paste. Power runs through, but no POST. Please help. Could the graphics card have overheated and need re-flow? Or could it be a dead CPU?

Thanks

"I already took out a small piece of magnesium casing I found in the mobo"

Why on earth would you do that. It's most likely part of the heat sink which would explain why it overheats now. At this point I would say take it to a shop and let them repair it.
