Volume Will Not Work

Hewlett-packard Pavilion media center a1...

Specs: Windows XP
So one day I was recording on my computer and instead of recording what was goin on in
my mic, it recorded what was happening in the
computer *ie noises in the computer* After trying to fix it I decided I could
just uninstall the sound drivers, reboot, it
would reinstall them and it would be a done
deal. Not quite. I uninstalled all my
sound/video game controller drivers and
rebooted. The hardware manager popped up
and tried to reinstall only to tell me it didn't
have the necessary software. I've tried
downloading the specific driver from the HP
Website but it was no use it didn't work upon
rebooting. If anyone could help me! *Note now
sound is emitted and the volume can't be
raised it stays at zero* Thanks!

Actually the Driver Fetch program requires paying to register. I'm
sure there must be some other way?
