video card won't display after reformat

August 11, 2010 at 18:36:03
Specs: Windows XP
i recently reformatted windows xp because i didnt feel like spending money to get a deadly virus removed. everything was installed properly. the video card worked at first at its lowest possible settings. it refreshed once every second. after i inserted my catalyst CD supplied by ATI and installed the drivers, it stopped working. im stuck with a discontinued stock video card that cant support the simplest games without fps lag.

PS- i have an ati radeon 2400 HD PCI. I also forgot to unhook the new card before i reformatted and do it with the old one. this could have possibly installed the drivers for my old card onto my new one???

"i recently reformatted windows xp because i didnt feel like spending money to get a deadly virus removed"

In other words, you didn't know how to remove the virus yourself.

"everything was installed properly"

What does that mean? Hardware was installed properly? Windows was reinstalled properly?

"the video card worked at first at its lowest possible settings"

In other words, it works using generic XP video drivers.

"after i inserted my catalyst CD supplied by ATI and installed the drivers, it stopped working"

Meaning what? You get no display at all? Nothing on the screen even at bootup? You need to explain yourself better.

"i have an ati radeon 2400 HD PCI"

PCI or PCI-express? If it is PCI, does that mean your board has no AGP or PCI-e slots? Is this an OEM system (Dell, Gateway, HP, etc) by any chance? If it is, post the model number.

"I also forgot to unhook the new card before i reformatted and do it with the old one"

It makes no difference which card is installed when you format the HDD. Everything is being erased & you're starting with a clean slate, so there's no chance the new card drivers would conflict with the old card drivers.

"In other words, you didn't know how to remove the virus yourself."

you'd think that would have been apparent. of course i don't know how to remove it when it has successfully prevented all anti viral software i have installed from removing it. if i did know how i wouldn't have reformatted in the first place. like i said, this was a deadly virus.

"everything was installed properly..."

meaning windows xp was installed with no problems

"after i inserted my catalyst CD supplied by ATI and installed the drivers, it stopped working"

meaning after i inserted the CD and installed the drivers it shows nothing (black) after the boot up screens. (i.e: the log in screen, nor anything afterwords.)

"i have an ati radeon 2400 HD PCI"

i did in fact say PCI for a reason. if it were pci express i may have possibly said.... PCI EXPRESS, believe it or not.

my motherboard has one PCI slot and one AGP slot. also: for some reaosn it wont allow me to post my model number.

im a bit confused about the point of your post. most people would have simply said 'explain yourself better' but you took that extra step in quoting me and cutting down each sentence i typed. you clearly enjoy correcting people. im curious to find if you do this to all posts?
