Using different size ram together.

Compaq / EVO

Specs: Windows xp pro
I have a Compaq Evo (convertible tower) p.4 1.7ghz currently using 2x256mb memory sticks (512mb). A friend of mine was going to give me 1x512mb stick, so I was wondering if I could place the 512mb stick in the 3rd slot and have it run at 1gb all together or would it only use the slowest speed? thanks

Can't tell you for sure without knowing the model of your EVO. Try entering the info into the Crucial Advisory Tool

I tried to figure out what model I have on compaq/hp website its either the d300 or d510 it looks more like the d510 but when I looked at the hardware reference guide it said it used a different type of memory than what my pc says inside which is pc133 sdram do you think you can tell from that?

There should be a sticker on the back of the tower.

When you post a model number or serial number, you have to include the hypens. Could it be the number is 6X1A-JYFZ-304Y? It appears to be a model from the D500 series. I find it hard to believe that the exact model number isn't printed somewhere on the case. From what I can tell, the D500 series used SDR-SDRAM, PC133. You think that's wrong?

I thought it might be the d510 convertible but I wasn't sure of it.
Yes, it does take pc133 sdram but when I looked at the manual for it it had a different type listed. I am 100% sure its not on my tower inside or out I've taken it completely apart and put it back together.

What type of ram did the manual specify?
