USB Mice - Not recognised

Acer / Aspire 1650

Specs: Windows XP, 1GB
Today I switched on my laptop and discovered my USB optical mouse wasn't working at all.

I tried using different ports and restarting the laptop. Nothing.

I got out a brand new USB optical mouse and that doesn't respond either.

Neither appear in the 'Device Manager'.

I don't think it's a problem with the ports as I tried using a memory stick, my digital camera and my MP3 player and they all worked fine. The computer recognised them just not the mice.

Help. ;_;

My only guess would be two things.

One is that somehow in bios a legacy setting for mice might have changed. (dunno how it could really)

Second is driver issue with old mouse.

See event viewer first. See system hardware and expand hidden.

Might try a system restore to time when it did work.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

Okay, I went into the event viewer and couldn't really find anything relevant....

I tried to do 2 system restores (2 different dates) but they failed. It couldn't do them.

Sometimes they appear in the Device Manager under 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' as an 'Unknown Device'

It says 'No Drivers are Installed for this device'

I tried uninstalling the driver then a message appeared saying Windows had 'Found New Hardware' and that it was installed and ready to use but then the error message reappeared a few seconds later saying that the USB device was not recognised.

It's a problem with the driver isn't it?

Windows is supposed to detect and install everything by itself so there is no disc therefore I can't reinstall it.

I don't know what to do.
