USB flash device assigned drive number, but not accessible

April 10, 2012 at 19:53:28
Specs: Windows 7
I have 3 x Toshiba brand 8GB USB flash drives. Two of three have stopped working. When they are inserted, about 1 in 4 times, a "driver software installation" message pops up saying the device is ready to use and then noting happens.

The device is not listed alongside the other drives/devices in the "devices with removable storage" list. I cannot access it in any way.

When I go to Control Panel's "view devices and printers" option, my flash drive is listed as "USB DISK 30X", and I can right click on it and see a browse files option, but what comes up is a greyed out (inaccessible) "Removable Disk (E):" option, so it's no good to me.

If I right click and look at "Properties/Hardware" under DEVICES STATUS it says "This device is working properly".

What I know is that the devices is recognised by my computer to the point that is assigned a drive letter (E), but that's the extent of it. The Flash drive is useless to me.

If anyone has any insight or can hep, I would be most grateful.

Thanks very much

Thanks, jefro.

Will try testdisk and let you know how it goes.

Jefro, FYI: I did try testdisk and it didn't help as the flash drive was not even recognised as a drive to scan or test. I tried inserting other USB sticks and they were recognised immediately.

Thanks for the advice, but I think the 8GB Toshiba flash drive I originally posted about is a lost cause.
