Solved USB external HD not Automatically recognized when plugged in

Specs: Windows XP
When I plug in my Western Digital hard drive, MDL: WD1200XMS-00, S/N: WXC907720105, into my computer, it does not come up automatically so that I can do back up. Am I doing something wrong? I have an XP, which I'm trying to back up. I also have Windows 8 but I haven't tried it on that computer yet. It says my driver is up to date. Can you Help?

If the Drive came with a driver CD then you'll probably have to install some drivers off of that to make your computer recognize the drive. I would definitely try it on Windows 8, as it tends to be more compatible.

Can you see this drive in My Computer when it is plugged in? If so it is a matter of changing AutoRun which we can advise about.

Is this drive for manual backing up or is there some automatic backup software provided with it?

It is not usually necessary to install any drivers for an external USB drive.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
