|I have a WD 640 GB My Book USB drive. One morning my computer was frozen so I had to power it down by holding down the power button and since then my laptop won't recognize the USB drive.|
I removed it from the device manager and when I reconnect it it says it finds Mass storage device and then wants me to find the software for it. I don't think it came with software and according to WD site this drive doesn't need drivers. I'm running XP and the model of the drive is WD6400H1U-00. I don't have a disk for it. So I let windows search and it doesn't find anything. Of course it says your hardware may not function properly. So I go into my computer and the drive will not show up.
After seeing people have probs. with the electronics in the casings I remove it from the casing and connected it directly using a USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Hard Drive adapter I picked up at Frys. It does the same thing when connected in the casing.
So I dig out my old desktop buried in the garage and it finds the drive and it shows up in my computer. Slower USB...says may run slow.
I've done a virus scan on my main C: drive and everything is good.
I've connected other devices to all of my usb connections. A printer, Line 6 Guitar Tone Port, a wireless mouse and everything connects fine. I also tried an old hard drive I found and it did the same thing with that. Looked for software and wouldn't find anything.
Why is my laptop not finding the drive anymore. Anyone please help.
