USB devices disconnecting for unknown reason

Specs: Windows 8.1
It is difficult to pinpoint whether it is a software problem or a hardware problem.
I can describe my configuration, but after searching with Google, the fact is that many cases are similar for other configurations as well. The common factor seems to be Windows.

My configuration : Asus T100 Transformer (10' tablet with keyboard) . This device runs Windows 8.1 but has only one USB 3.0 port. So a 4-port powered hub is required.
The hub is attached to the Asus T100 using it's original regular usb3.0 cable.
Two devices are connected :
1. a wireless transmitter for Logitech mouse M235 (not related to this problem)
2. a portable external disk (usb3.0 original cable).Seagate Backup Plus Slim (not powered).
This unit disconnects from system apparently only when this 'laptop' is left untouched for a longer time. This happens at each time.

It looks as if there is a time-out for the connection after a 'not-busy-period'. But there is no acoustical warning (like for a manual removal of an usb device)Windows Explorer does not see the disk anymore.

I can suspect anything : USB controllers management on any or all 3 units, cables , Windows, power settings for Windows.

So far, the disk has not diconnected as long as the T100 has been 'active' (user present) but that might be just coïncidence.
Thank you for suggestions.

I don't use 8.1. That said, Windows 8.12 should be similar to 7. Try changing the following setting. In Windows 7> Control Panel> Power Options> Change Plan Settings> Change Advanced Power settings> USB Settings> USB Selective Suspend Settings> Set to Disable.

If that does not do it, do an experiment, remove the mouse and hub and try the hard drive plugged directly into the USB port to see if it is the hub at issue, but it sounds like OtheHill probably has the right of it there.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Thank you Othehill
I could not find yet in Win 8.1 a similar setting at this location ; maybe it is somewhere else in the control panel's menu's.

This is a bit embarassing. Since some time now, the disk hasn't disconnected itself in the same conditions (when T100 is left inactive for some time). So I'm unsure if the problem is still alive or not.

The only thing I'm sure : similar issues (disconnecting usb devices) have been reported and users facing the issue seem to incriminate Windows 8/8.1.

I cannot assign a "Best answer" yet. The suggestion of Fingers (#2) is a good idea, when and if the disk disconnects itself again in the same circumstances.

However yesterday it kept disconnecting for no apparent reason, in completely new different manner : continuously at short intervals of a few minutes , maybe maximum 10 times,

Removing the usb3.cable and reconnecting it, resulted each time in reconnecting the disk with success. Every file was accessed without problem.

While during that same short period of tme 15-20 minutes, the keyboard input was deadslow !
After that period , no problem any more.Even after leaving the AsusT00 untouched for the whole evening the disk remained connected, exactly as the days before, and as opposed to the topic start question .

At this moment, while typing now everything seems again to work norrmally.
I can't figure out what is going on.
I'm suspicious about the hardware of this AsusT100 , but what ?
Thank you
