upgrading buffalo external

January 21, 2009 at 08:19:24
Specs: Windows XP mce 2005, 4 gb
hello,

i have a buffalo 250 gb external hd. i recently bought a wd 1tb gp hd 7200rpm.

i was curious, if i could switch, and put the 1tb in the external driv, and put the 250 gb as an internal drive.

the reason i would feel more comfortable if my backup was done outside my computer.

thanks,
craig

If they are both SATA or both PATA yes.

Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

It depends on where you have your operating system, & if you have files you want to save.

So, I assume you have an internal drive, plus the 250 as an external. Plus the 1 Tera.

Or, is the 1 tera the internal drive with the os installed.

hello clive,

i have the os (xpsp3)on the 1tb. my computer
(xps400) holds 2 drives. i have another 500gb drive presently out of my system. because i have been presently spending a lot of time troubleshooting my system since xmas.

at xmas -i put in the 1tb drive and added 2gb of memory. my system did not kindly to this but it has settled down a bit now. i am thinking of placing the 500gb and the 250 gb drive inside the computer and then inserting the 1tb drive in my external drive and backing up the internals to the external drive.

i am apprehensive because i do not want to do anything wrong , and have damage due to my lack of experience in tinkering with external drives, i
searched but i have found no tutorial on how to upgrade external drives.

thanks,
craig

Craig, so you need to image/clone the operating system to one of your other drives.

Bear in mind I am no expert. But this is what I would do. If there is nothing you want on the 500, put it back in the pc, set this drive to slave.

Then, go to the hard drive manufacturer & find a Utility to clone/transfer to a new drive, or use Ghost.

You will need to read up about this. Ghost/image, to the 500, then remove the 1 terra & fit into an enclosure.

Read this page, & look at the links

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/su...

Discwizard copies the os over to the other drive, the link has instructions for this.

Other drive manufacturers have similar instructions
