Thank you all for your replies.
I want my new machine to be able to run games smoothly and be able to create documents (Excel, Database, word etc). Currently my machine does everything which I need it too but it is starting to seem sluggish compared to the ones I use everyday. At the moment, the machine runs the games I currently play, but as new games are constantly coming out, I think my machine would not be up for the task in the future.
What I meant by "future proof" was, the machine will not need upgrading for a couple of years, and when the time does come to upgrade the machine, it will only be minor modifications rather than the whole rig.
I have no preference what type processer the machine is, as long as it does the jobs I require of it. (The odd bit of gaming and general computer tasks)
I would like to try to build my own machine, and hopefully with the help with you people on this forum, I will be able to get a value of money machine.
In regards to an operating system, I have already purchased Windows XP 64. I was under the impression I needed this version of Windows if I was going to upgrade my machine.
Hopefully "Jam" would be able to help me in choosing the components for this machine. I do not mind exceeding my limit of £1000 as long as the performance outweighs the cost.
Sorry Supertrucker, I did not see that option when having a look at the website. The only options I could see were pre-built computers.
I was having a look at potential builds and my initial build is:
