Note: My current windows 7 64bit and CPU core i5=2.4GHz and RAM=8GB

What makes you think you need to update the BIOS. A BIOS update is only needed to address a particular problem. If you are not sure a BIOS update witll work best to leave because if you get it wrong you end up with an expensive door stop.

You do NOT have to update the BIOS, but you WILL have to find the necessary drivers for Windows 8. If they are not available from the Dell website, you will have to do some detective work to identify each of your hardware components (chipset, graphics, audio, network, wireless, etc), then locate & download the Win8 compatible drivers. Why do you want Win8 in the 1st place?

Echoing the above posts... you will need to know what exactly is installed in terms of hardware - as the drivers for tit all may not be available from Dell website/support etc.

Run Belarc Advisor and it will generate a full report on what is installed - hardware (and software with the keys too).

Print that report and also save it off the system as a file - for future reference.

Then run the Win-8 upgrade assistant - full details from M$-land here:

It will report what is OK for win-8; what may be OK; and what win-8 will not have in the way of drivers... Print the report, and also save as a file off the system - as above with Belarc Advisor

The two reports will enable you to determine what you may need to source...

FWI... I ran the upgrade assistant for a very elderly Acer Aspire 1692wlmi - running XP-Pro. It found that most of the drivers required were in win-8; and the one or two that weren't were available I found were available from the respective website for the items in question; e.g Realtek, Intel and so on...

Good to know... (StuartS); and I would think the 8Gig RAM would be adequate too?

Quite why go up to win-8.1 when win-7 is working fine...; I wouldn't. It ain't broke so why phyxe it?
