Solved Upgrade Advice required please

Acer / Aspire x3300

Specs: Windows 8, 3 GHz / 3839 MB
Hi there.

So basically i have had my pc maybe 3 years now it's acer aspire x3300 and admittedly it turns out i was a bit silly buying a small form factor PC as i didn't realize the hassle of upgrading. Im basically confused as too what parts i can put in and what i cant if that makes sense. I would like a faster processor than the AMD Phenom II X2 inside it and a graphics card upon which i can play the latest games because this nvidia g210 sucks!

My motherboard model is WMCP78M according too CPU-Z.

I have 4gb DDR3 Ram i know i need 8gb at least for gaming and i know how too do that.

Power Supply on these things is only a measly 220w so im presuming your gonna say i need too strip it and put it in a new case which im also happy to do if that is required.

Could you please just give me advice on maybe what parts too buy, what case if required and power supply etc.

I would be very grateful.

My advice is to start from scratch. Upgrading to a state of the art graphics card will be next to impossible because of the limited upgrade ability of your power supply.

I am not finding very much information on the actual hardware including the motherboard.

That said, you should be able to reuse the DDR3 memory, hard drive and possibly the optical drive. You should be able to migrate the motherboard to a standard mATX or ATX case which will allow you to install a standard power supply with enough wattage to power a gaming graphics card.

You most likely won't get your OEM copy of Vista to work if you replace the motherboard with a newer one that would have more features.

I suggest you keep the small form factor intact and just buy or build a entire new rig. You could use the mouse, keyboard and monitor on a new computer.

"acer aspire x3300"

Incomplete model number. What comes after X3300? And which CPU do you currently have? I'd hold off on the CPU & RAM upgrades & concentrate on the graphics card & power supply (PSU). Finding the proper PSU to fit that case is going to be a problem. You're going to have to determine the form factor - microATX, mini-ITX, SFX, TFX, etc. And once you determine that, you'll need to find one with higher wattage & decent amperage specs.

"it turns out i was a bit silly buying a small form factor PC"

Exactly right.

You can build an extremely nice system for around $500-575. For starters, take a look at the Tech Report's Econobox:

I'd actually change a few things in the config above. TR's machine is $575, but you can save around $120 by reusing your old hard drive, DVD burner, and RAM. Then, if you'd like, you could spend the leftover money on a quad-core i5-3470 instead of the suggested i3-2120. And instead of a Radeon HD 7770, opt for the faster GeForce GTX 560.

The CPU and GPU upgrades would bring the price back up to ~$575, but you'd have a much faster system than the standard Econobox.

mATX Beast | LGA2011 i7-3930K @ 4.2GHz | 16GB quad-channel DDR-1866 | GTX 670
240GB SSD+2TB HDD | Asus Rampage IV Gene | Seasonic X560 | Silverstone TJ08-E

"nothing comes after it"

Where are you looking? It wouldn't be on the front of the case. Here's an example of an Acer Aspire X3300-U1322:

Sorry, but I did try google. That's how I know X3300 is the series & the characters after the series number nail down the model. That's also how I know there were at least 3 models in that series - X3300-U1322, X3300-ED4620A, X3300-X223HQ.
