Unexpected shut down

Dell Studio 1537

Specs: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, 2.267 GHz / 3035 MB
My Studio 1537, a little over 1 year old, has started shutting down unexpectedly. It will restart by pressing the power button and when booting up it recognizes that it shut down improperly; giving the option for a safe mode startup. Is there a diagnostic tool I can used to determine the reason for this problem?

Check the temperatures. You might find them in the Bios (best), or you can download a motherboard monitoring program like Speedfan.

Yes and No.

1. The memory. You can download MemTest86+, burn the image to a CD, boot from it and see if it finds an error.

2. CPU Overheating. Go to BIOS and make sure the temperature is at least lower than 50 degrees Celsius.

3. The power supply. Less likely. but possible. You can use a multimeter to test it.....
