Undo Dual Boot problem

June 27, 2009 at 22:46:51
Specs: Windows 2000, 2.5G
I have WIN98 on one HDD(slave)& WIN2000 on another HDD (Master). 4 years no problem. I want to remove the slave drive with WIN98 to another computer. I have edited the Boot.ini so WIN98 doesn't show on a menu of OSs and my computer boots directly to WIN2000 as long as I don't unplug the power/data cables from the WIN98 drive. If i unplug the WIN98 drive, 2000 won't load and I get the following message:
Disk I/O error: Status = 00000008

Win 200 could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.

Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.

Check WIN2000 documentation about hardware disk configuration.

Jumper blocks are set correct per mnf website for the HDD as a single - Master and connected to the correct connector on the data cable.
I have also connected - in the slave position - a new HDD I am going to use as a replacement, didn't help.

What else needs to be done besides edit the boot.ini to get my computer to boot to WIN 2000 without the WIN 98 drive??

Disconnect the slave drive & double check the jumper setting on the master...it *may* have to be changed [Master (single) or Master (w/slave)]. Then try booting off the Win2000 CD & running either FIXBOOT C: or FIXMBR C: from the recovery console.
