Trying to use flashdrive with VirtualBox

Specs: 7, Dual Core/16 gigs DDR3
Sorry if this is the wrong category, there is no "VirtualBox" category so I just took a chance.

Long story short.

I was using 4.3 I think. it was slow, but it worked. I have some files on that virtual machine that I want to back up. I tried doing all kinds of different things to get a USB flash drive to be recognized by VB but nothing worked.

Host OS: Win 7
Guest OS: Linux Mint Cinnamon 17 (Maya?)

Installed add on pack. Still cannot get VB to see flash drive. Used 2 flash drives.

Upgraded to VB 5. something, the newest.. Completely wrecked my VB. Now when I start VB, my mouse and keyboard don't work.

How can I pull off the files?

Old stuff that still works, somewhat....

First of all you have to configure USB support in the settings for your guest. Then use the Devices/USB menu in VirtualBox, with you VM running, to attach the flash drive. You should first make sure that it is detached from your host machine (Safely Remove Harware and Eject Media) to avoid corruption.

Yeah, did that.
With the flash drive plugged in, I start the VM. The host makes the disconnect sound and I can't see the drive in Windows anymore. Then I go to devices on the VM and select the flash drive. A window pops up saying that the drive is busy with another request. Try again later.
Or if I start the VM first, then plug in the flash drive, same thing.
Either way, the light on the flash drive doesn't even light up.
When I shut down the VM, the flash drive comes back up in Windows.

But as I said, now when I start the VM, the keyboard and mouse stop working completely. I need to hit the restart button.

Old stuff that still works, somewhat....
