Toshiba screen stays black

June 11, 2015 at 13:57:08
Specs: Windows 7
My boss turned off his laptop, possibly during the last update for windows 8, and now the screen wont turn on (stays black). I have it hooked up to an external monitor, which works fine. I've changed the F4 settings (tough with no monitor to work with) so that I can work with the external monitor, but am at a loss as what to do next. it is a Toshiba C55-a5100 if anyone can help.

Maybe it would be worth trying System Restore to a date before this update.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

There are a few Toshiba system updates that need to be done, including a BIOS one that I will work on tonight before I resort to that, but that's what I think is going to be the end result.

if your bios updates is not done properly it could what they say become a boat anchor non usable again.make sure it is plugged in not on battery power and power is not turned off or intermittent while doing so. i would try to restore it first to and earlier date when it was working properly like Derek said to due bios is a last resort in my book.

Yep, BIOS updates (unlike other updates) should only be applied if there is some special need, such as fitting a different processor. It is very rare indeed to have to do them. A fault is most unlikely to disturb BIOS, as its updates are flashed into microchips and therefore semi-permanent.

have done all updates, have done some steps listed on other pages (powering down etc). my system restore has three return points to but none will let me restore to them.

You mentioned Windows 8 updates but the spec says Windows 7. Was it in the course of updating from 7 to 8?

Depending on which you are running you could try updating the Graphics Driver from Toshiba, using the monitor.
