Thanks so much for the soultion, I did as you said and it showed the start screen on the extension screen and I managed to restart from there, take all the important data of the hard drive and it settled to normal behaviour.
I tried turning off and on a few times and it seems to struggle to start most of the time.
If I leave the battery out and the power unplugged for a reasonable time it seems to start.
Would that point to chip fault as it retains some power then looses it after a while with no power?
Thanks agains for your advice, girlfriend is very happy as worried she had lost important work files.
