Solved Toshiba laptop won't start up

June 4, 2012 at 02:14:20
Specs: Vista
Toshiba sat l300d won't start up. Screen is blank, I can hear the hard drive make a noise for a few seconds, no hard drive light then stops. It has done this before and sometimes after repeated start up tries it eventually gets going.
Any ideas please?
Ps gather this is common as this laptop is my girlfriends and mine does the same when I don't use it for a while.

If you don't see the boot screen, then try an external monitor.

If you do, then you need to test the hard drive.

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.

Hi
Thanks so much for the soultion, I did as you said and it showed the start screen on the extension screen and I managed to restart from there, take all the important data of the hard drive and it settled to normal behaviour.

I tried turning off and on a few times and it seems to struggle to start most of the time.
If I leave the battery out and the power unplugged for a reasonable time it seems to start.

Would that point to chip fault as it retains some power then looses it after a while with no power?

Thanks agains for your advice, girlfriend is very happy as worried she had lost important work files.

Kind regards
David

If, you can't see anything on the laptop screen when it does start, I'd say graphics card/motherboard.

A thank you would be nice, if I have helped.
