to replace with new one

Specs: Windows XP
I would like to install a new acer aspire 9410-4897
hard drive.. how do I remove the old one.. it has 3
screws to hold it in place... do I just force it
sideways?

Why are you doing that? Are you trying to increase capacity? If so, you need to verify the laptop can use a larger capacity drive.

because I want to give the give the laptop away, and make sure
all personal information is erased.

The operating system is probably on a hidden partition. Did you make a restore set of disks for the laptop? If not, then I suggest you do. That set will not include any personal data. Nothing except what was on the laptop when it came from the factory. That way whoever you are giving it to won't need to BUY an operating system.
