yes i tried f8.i tried taking out battery and power cord,i tried to use a disk to clean off the hard drive but it will not play the disk,i cannot get into the startup menu

What about the POST, power on self test? Do you see that before the screen goes black? If you can get into the BIOS, reset it to defaults.

What CD did you try?

i had tried a hard drive cleaner but will not read the disk. i cant get to the bios,,i turn it on and the windows xp screen comes up and about 2 minutes later a blue screen comes up that say unmountable_boot_volume ,its goes off so fast that i dont get to read the page,then it goes the screen with the start up safe modes,,,i tried everyone but get no results,,,,then it will just keep going thru the same cycles

If you have the XP CD, boot with it & do a repair install. If you don't have the CD, try F10. That will access the recovery partition if it exists. You will lose all data if you take that route.

do it have to be an IBM xp dsk

It either has to be an IBM OEM CD or a retail CD with the key.

In other words, it can't be a Dell XP CD.
