No one is going to let you test a new hard drive before buying it.

What are you trying to accomplish by doing that? The experienced helpers here can probably help you with selections based on what you are looking for.

Speed, dependability, cost, etc.?

Download and install seatools for windows and install it, if the external drive is plugged in and recognized run the seatool program, it will also show the external drive, run the extended test.

Alternatively you can download the software from the manufacturer to test "their own" hard drive such western digital, toshiba etc. All have their own diagnostic tools available free to download. I find seatools works well on most drives.

Seatools has 2 flavors dos and windows versions. Seatools for dos makes a boot cd to test a hard drive if you cannot load into Windows anymore. Since your computer does work and you want to test external drives you would install Seatools for Windows.

If I understand your question you want to evaluate different external drives BEFORE buying one. Is that correct?

There are inexpensive hard disk enclosures (sometimes called a caddy) which allow you to plug them into a USB port. Maybe one of those will allow you to do whatever you are intending.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
