Suspect HDD is Failing...??

January 19, 2010 at 16:03:16
Specs: Windows XP, 1.997 GHz / 2047 MB
I suspect my HDD (80G WDC WD800JB-00JC0) is failing.

Here are screen shots of my S.M.A.R.T. test.

Could someone interpret them for me....do these reading support my suspicion..??

Certianly it looks like the numbers suggest its not in good shape, but SMART can sometimes be misleading and difficult to interpret. If its not slow, sounds fine and you dont get any errors with files, opening programs and starting windows I'd be happy with using it. But as always make sure you have a backup of ALL your important data!

You can test the drive with Western Digital's own diagnostic utility called 'Data Lifeguard Diagnostic' . There's a version for DOS (you create a bootable CD or floppy with the download), or a version for Windows which you install.

If you're testing the system drive I would use the bootable DOS version:

Mattwizz3....got everything backed up, not worried about loss of files but I am worried about the amount of time it takes to repair the computer if or when it does crash.

pip22...I gotta go to work but I'll check into the Data Lifeguard Diagnostic when I get home.

Thanks for the replies and for takin' the time to read the post.

I'm having trouble burning the .iso file.

I tried with Nero and it didn't take. I downloaded Active@ ISO Burner and it still didn't take.

I guess my writer is bad or something. I'll look at it tomorrow: spent enough time on it tonight.

One good thing did come from this exercise....I re-booted my computer about 10-15 times with no trouble, the HDD fired it up without hesitation.

I still wanna run the diagnostic....so I'm gonna try again.

Thanks Cody, I appreciate your opinion/interpretation of the S.M.A.R.T.

Like I said, SMART can be difficult to interpret and isnt really clear if your not sure what your looking at. I used to have an excellent hard drive monitoring program, I'll see if I can dig it up. It gave you the status of your drive in very simplified and easy to read way.

It annoys me, burners have been around for years but in my experiance are still so unreliable. About 60% of cd's I burn end up as costers, and thats with at least 8 different drives.
