Suggestion needed for hard drive and RAM upgrade.

Specs: Windows 7, Core2Duo E7500, 4GB DDR3 RAM
Hello you wise people,

I have Gigabyte GA G41 Combo mobo in my desktop with two Seagate hard drives and 4GB of RAM (its a local brand), processor is C2D E7500. I haven't overclocked anything in my PC yet. But very soon I want to upgrade my system a bit. I want to add another hard drive from Seagate of 4 TB capacity [Seagate SATA 4 TB (ST4000DM000)]. Can I just add this new hard drive along with the existing drives of 500 GB and 1 TB or shall I upgrade my RAM first?

So friends I have 2 models of RAM in my mind,

[b]1. Kingston Technology HyperX 8 GB (2x4 GB Modules) 1600 MHz DDR3 Dual Channel Kit (PC3 12800) 240-Pin SDRAM KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX[/b] (This is the RAM model which has been in the list of RAMs accepted by my mobo according to Gigabyte)

[b]2. Gskill 4Gb X 1 Ddr3 1333Mhz Cl9 Value Ram For Desktop[/b] (This is the RAM model used successfully by one my friends having this same mobo)


I want to ask you people that is it OK for me to just add another 4TB hard drive to my system having above mentioned specs and hardware or shall I upgrade my RAM too? I want to upgrade my RAM to 8GB but which model of the above two shall I purchase? I want to use my system at the maximum possible speed allowed by my CPU, mobo and RAM (obviously after I upgrade my RAM too with one of the above). And for that what and how shall I tweak in my BIOS settings (overclock)

First please advice me about the Hard drive and RAM upgrade then I would try to overclock my system to its max values as per you people suggest.

Wow. I didn't read all of that. You may need to use disk part to get the full capacity of the 4 TB drive recognized. How many SATA ports do you have? Why the need for the third internal drive? Why not just get an external?

Did you check crucial to see what RAM is compatible with your system?

If you really need that much space, then add the drive. You just need to understand that your system would not accept it as a boot drive but it can be used as a storage drive as long as you initiate it correctly as a GPT drive (not MBR). The amount of memory is irrelevant to the drive you use. 4GB RAM is not bad but if you multitask a lot, 8GB would be better. Overclocking your E7500 should not be difficult on your G41 motherboard, though if it was a P43 or P45, you would have more options and more headroom. Read up on overclocking with your motherboard (Google) and when you feel you have some understanding of the process, come back and we can make some specific recommendations based on your hardware. I have one machine with a G41 and an E7400 OC to about 3.5GHz (I forget exactly) for quite a few years now so you should not have any problems there.
It is important to do ONE upgrade or modification at a time and give it enough time to make sure everything is running right before you go on to the next one. This way, you know exactly what the problem might be instead of a lot of wild guessing if you do have a problem.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Thanks for the reply,
I have one more SATA port unoccupied now. There are total 4 ports available on my mobo. I connected my 2 hard disks (500GB and 1TB) to 2 of them and 3rd one is connected to optical drive.

I don't want external hard drive as they are costlier. Here in India hardware is too costly.

I had checked Crucial and found a RAM model for my requirement and mobo specs, its " Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL9 @1.5V UDIMM 240-Pin Memory BLS2CP4G3D1609DS1S00 ".

So this makes total 3 RAM models which are suitable for my mobo. Which one would be the best for perfect performance?

Yes I want this drive just for storage purpose.

The RAM which is currently working in my PC is just a local brand. Please have a look at the RAM specs in my post above. Its operating at just 5K MHz. Thats the reason I want to upgrade to 8GBs of RAM and want to run it at 1333 (OC) as stated by my mobo manufacturer. Please tell me if I upgrade to any 3 of the RAMs listed above then will it really operate at 1333 MHz? Will there be any actual improvement in the PC performance? And which of the above 3 RAMs would be perfectly suited for the config I have.

I read on net somewhere that to overclock the RAM we need to have an option in BIOS called XMP Profile. I scrolled through my BIOS for this particular setting but I couldn't find it.

There is just this setting in BIOS for RAM----"Performance Enhance---Standard, Turbo and Extreme.". Currently its set just to 'Standard'.

Next setting is "(G) MCH Frequency Latch---266 MHz, 200 MHz and 333 MHz" and its set to 266 MHZ right now.

So are these two settings work same as "XMP" which is needed to OC the new 1333 8GB Dual channel RAM?

I am planning to add 2 sticks of 4GBs each. Or shall I add just 1 stick of 8GBs? Which one would be better? My mobo has 2 slots for DDR3 RAM (max. upto 8GBs)

By the way, I am now narrowing-in on Crucial RAM listed by me above. Actually I found this RAM on Crucial website using its memory finder tool for my specific mobo. Please have a look at these RAM modules too as they are available online here in India on Amazon-India-----

Will these work for my mobo? If yes then, as stated by you, will I be able to OC my CPU to say 3.5GHz or above without stability issues?

Apparently you don't understand overclocking theory. For a Core 2 Duo system, the optimal CPU:RAM frequency ratio is either 1:1 or 1:2. The default FSB speed for the E7500 is 1066MHz which is 266MHz frequency. Based on what you posted in the OP, your current RAM is DDR3-1333 but you have it configured to run at 533MHz frequency rather than 667MHz. That's OK. The current CPU:RAM freq ratio is 266:533 which equals 1:2, so it's an ideal configuration.

If you overclock your CPU to 1333MHz FSB (333MHz freq), you don't need different RAM, you can simply change the RAM settings in the BIOS to increase the RAM freq to 667 MHz to maintain that 1:2 ratio. As for XMP RAM, it's basically for people who are clueless on how to overclock manually. You already have DDR3-1333, so new RAM is totally unnecessary. Save your money & learn how to overclock!
