Specs: Windows 7 Ultimate x64, C2D2.8GHZ/4GB
Hi

My system is making a strange sound (Its like Tik Tik Tik Tik Tik and get faster and louder sometimes and then its like GooOOOOooo). Well I opened the computer case and checked everything. Every cable is properly plugged in tight. I did monitor the fans and it seemed like the sound was coming from my Graphics Card Fan. While monitoring the fans I switched the computer off and I noticed that the sound was well Synced with the Graphics Card Fan. The Graphic Card Fan was the first one to slow down and stop. When It slowed down the sound also became slower and was like Tik - Tik and then the sound stopped with the fan. The CPU Fan was the second one to stop and the sound was not at all synced with the CPU fan. The Last Fan to stop was the Power Supply inner Fan and the sound was also not synced with PSU fan. The CPU and PSU fans were spinning in their own motion and the sound did not seem to related to them. Even when they slowed down the sound did not seemed to have been coming from them. However the Graphic Card Fan seemed to be making the sound. The sound was coming from the very bottom of the case where the Graphic Card is Located.

System Specs Are

C2D E7400@2.8Ghz
Kingston 2GB DDR2
160GB SATA MAXTOR
450WATTS PSU (TWO fans. One Inside and One Outside)
Graphic Card 9400GT nividia (I don't do gaming. Only Movies and Videos.)

Can Graphic Cards make such sounds and if so whats the solution. Its out of Warranty and I can't afford to buy a new one right now.

Please Help!

Get a piece of flexible plastic tubing (a couple of feet long should do) & use it as a stethoscope. With the computer running & the side cover off, put one end of the tubing up to your ear, then very carefully probe around inside the case to see if you can pinpoint the source of the clicking.

So you have identified the problem. You should first clean the fan as the noise may simply be caused by a loose bit of detritus rubbing on the fan blades. If that does not help then it may be the bearing has worn out allowing the fan to vibrate off-balance. Sometimes lubricating the bearing with a drop of light machine oil under the adhesive label on the centre bearing, will get a few weeks/months more life out of it but replacing the fan is going to be needed at some stage.

Well The Graphic Card is not that old. The Warranty just finished a month ago. I got local 10 Month Warranty on it. In my country the warranty of most hardware is 10 Months if you want more warranty you have to pay a lot extra. That costs more then other countries and what the manufacturer charges. So Can This kind of problem occur in just 11 Months. I don't use the computer 24Hrs a day. I use it for almost 8 - 10 per day and not more then that and the system remains off when not in use at night and also in between the day for some time. I have cleaned the fan with a soft brush and compressed air. What next?

And yes this kind of thing can happen in the time you mention. Environmental factors have an effect. eg I live in a very dusty home and have to clean out my PCs every 6 months or so. Fans have lasted sometimes as little as a few months.

Ok. Thanks Richard59. I also live in a dusty home. Actually there's a lot of dust in my country but I try to keep my computer safe. Clean it often. Anyways . Thanks.
