Solved Strange Laptop Issues - Acer Aspire 5742

January 3, 2015 at 03:32:36
Specs: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, Intel Core i3 @ 3.10GHz | 8GB DDR3 1333MHz
All right. I've been having these issues for some time, and I can only assume that they're pointing toward something. There is quite a few of them, so please bear with me.

1. Hibernation in Windows 7 is completely unusable- it will not work at all. When enabled and activated by either closing the lid or manually clicking the hibernate button, it simply kicks back to the login screen with the laptop still fully powered on. I've been using Sleep Mode to circumvent this issue, though I would still prefer Hibernation Mode. It's been like this since I purchased the laptop.

2. Long bootup times began suddenly around two months ago- and only seem to affect my Windows installation- Ubuntu boots as quickly as it ever did. It also takes some time (around 2-3 minutes) once the desktop is loaded for programs to actually become usable.

3. Seemingly random Windows Disk Check on startup- occasionally after running Ubuntu, and sometimes just at random intervals. I've let it run fully through multiple times with no errors found.

4. Chrome hangs, Unity Web Player crashes, Explorer occasionally completely stops responding, etc.

5. When the battery becomes so low that the laptop would normally shut down, it simply goes to a black screen and will still make noise when typing or if a video/program was running when it went black. It will do this right up until I either force shut down the computer or the battery completely dies.

That's all of the main issues I can remember at the moment. I will post the system specifications below, as the specifications in my signature are for my desktop computer.

Acer Aspire 5742
Intel Core i3 @ 2.53GHz
8GB DDR3 RAM
Intel HD Graphics
500GB HDD (Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit)

I don't know the brand name of the HDD, as I've never bothered to check. If needed, though, I can certainly do that. With these issues, though, I can only assume it's some sort of hardware issue.

Thank you in advance!

" It's been like this since I purchased the laptop."
Did you purchase it new? Reconditioned? From a person or store? How long ago?
Try running Memtest from CD to see if the memory might be part of the problem (though it does appear to be Windows that is the problem here).
Do you have a recovery disk (made or from vendor) for the Windows installation?
If the time frame is not too long that you have it/been having trouble, you might be able to do a system restore to almost as far back as possible (though program and update installs will need to be redone after) and see if that would help. Otherwise you might need to do a repair install of Windows (after a careful back up) to fix these issues (followed by a reinstall of your boot manager for Linux).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

@Fingers

I purchased it used from a friend of mine, though the only problem it originally had was the Hibernation issue. I didn't put much thought into it.

I'll try Memtest, but if nothing comes up, I may end up just re-installing Windows altogether. I don't keep much on my laptop worth backing up so it's a fairly easy process for me. If that doesn't fix it, well ... I guess it's a bigger issue.

Did you wipe the HDD & install Windows from scratch after you got it or are you still using the original installation?

@riider

I wiped the HDD and reinstalled Windows when I got it. I don't like using factory installations.

I'm just running Memtest86+ through the Ubuntu boot menu now. I'll report back once the test is finished with the results.

Since you already reinstalled Windows clean, the memory tests OK, The hard drive appears to be fine (install went well and otherwise works), Assuming you are using the correct drivers from the mfg's site, so it is either motherboard or BIOS.
Try updating drivers again, if that does not help, you may need to try flashing BIOS, but please take all precautions because a bad BIOS update and you may be replacing the motherboard. I recommend doing it with the machine plugged into a UPS to prevent possible power issues causing you problems.

@Fingers

I'll try updating the drivers and BIOS shortly to see if that's the issue.

Update;

Completely reformatting my hard drive and doing a clean install of Windows 7 seems to have resolved the issues for the moment.
