Specs: Windows Vista
I have a wirelss Windstream router. Always worked fine until a few days ago. Now, when I turn on my computer, I get a lot of loud static on my phone. Turn off my computer and the static stops.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Remove the power to the router with the computer on and see if the noise goes away. If the noise remains with the power off the router then there is spmething wrong with the computer. Disable the wirless netwrok card and see if that stops the noise.

A process of elimination is what does it. Work out what it isn't unrill all you are left with is one thing that it could be.

If the modem isn't bad, something changed in the house. Was any other work done?

Are your phones cordless? There could be a conflict if your router and phone broadcast frequencies are the same. Also, is your Internet service thru cable or DSL? If DSL, you may need to add some phone line filters to eliminate the static.

I am not sure if the modem is bad or not. I have the Windstream bundle for phone and internet. I have had it for about a year and no problems until 3 days ago. There is a filter for the phone line and it also connects into my wireless router. No work has been done by anyone and everything was working fine for the past year.
If my computer is off, then I have no static on the phone. Turn the computer on and the static begins. If I get a call when I am on the internet, then the static will stop as soon as I turn my computer off. Until I do that, the static is so loud, I can not hear the other person on the phone.
I have good interent connection and do not loose it but if I listen to my phone I hear a loud static. My phone is connected into the phone line and is a wirelss handset.
Computer off, no static on the phone...

Stuart,
Thank you! Yes, I pulled the cord for the power to the router and the static on the phone stopped. I plugged it back in and removed the phone line to the router and the static stopped also. Always, with the computer on.

Does that mean my router is bad? Maybe, a bad phone line?
Anyway, yes you have been a great help and I thank you so much!

Try a new phone line filter first, they sometimes go bad. Thay are cheap to buy. If that doesn't solve the problem then it can only be the router.

You could get your phone company to check out the phone line but that is unlikely to be the problem,
