ssd cache combined with ssd help increase speed?

May 7, 2012 at 21:18:58
Specs: Windows 7 windows server 2008 r2
Intel is pushing the Z series chipset and one of the selling point is the SRT technology.
I know that the benefit of the Z series allow user to use smaller and inexpensive SSD as cache to increase HHD performance.

Here is my question; would SSD drive combine with another small SSD set as cache increase performance over Just SSD?

option 1
1 x SSD 240 GB – OS
1 x SSD 60 GB - cache

option 2
1 x SSD 240 GB
1 x SSD 60 GB - OS

option 3
1 x SSD 240 GB - OS

Which one of the options will have the best performance?

U can use any ssd as a cache but do u know INTEL released special ssd(the intel 311 series ssd) that use SLC memory(last longer) instead of MLC memory for this job?

Have u thought about Hybrid-hard drive?

No didn’t know INTEL has the new series of SSD, but I will look into it.
As for the Hybrid-Hard Drive, I will not consider it since the performance is not as good as Just SSD. Try to get the best performance as possible.

I like to know if having just an SSD would it perform better if I have an SSD + SSD cache (two separate SSD one 240GB and one 60 GB).

If adding additional SSD strictly for cache would benefit in performance I will than consider to purchase additional one. If not I would just invest one large SSD.
Thanks for your reply

The difference between option 1 & 2 is not huge.
U can use 240gb ssd in option 3 to partition 20gb for caching and the rest for OS.
U don't plan to use bigger HDD for storage?

Sorry I should have made it clear. The reason I ask about adding the 2nd SSD for Caching because on the motherboard (Asus Z77 maximus v gene) have an option to install mSATA device. I was thinking to add an mSATA SSD cache to the package.
As you mention two SSD one use for cache make no different. If the is the case I will than purchase a larger SSD.

Yes I have 4 other SATA 2TB set as raid 1.

Thanks again

I believe most (if not all) mSATA drives and ports that I have seen are SATA 3GB/s so an SSD SATA 6GB/s drive would be faster and a PCIe 4x drive would be even faster (though much more expensive).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
