Sound recording problems

Specs: Windows Vista, Intel Pentium Dual Core T2370 1.73GHz. 1GB RAM.
I use a Line 6 POD X3 to record my guitar. Essentially the POD sends the audio signal via USB into my laptop (E-System 1201) and then I use Audacity to record. Last week I had left my laptop on for a while, longer than usual, and then did some recording. The recorded sound was incredibly bad. It's weird, I've been experimenting ever since and it seems only high treble sounds get distorted and bad quality, so I'm wondering if I've destroyed part of my sound card? (i.e. because with more bass heavy/less treble audio signals they get recorded fine, albeit with clipping, but I'm not sure if that's related).

If I need to get a new sound card, any recommendations? Just need something cheap that will do the job.

Any help is much appreciated

Are you sure the input to the laptop is not too loud? This would explain the distortion.

Thanks, this totally worked!! Feel a little embarrassed it was this simple. The POD has master and tone volume controls, and I had them high/low in the wrong way it seems. Thanks again!
